I have a gear oil leak on my FWD 4100 where the RH steering arm turns on the spindle housing. My technical manual has a parts list diagram but does not tell how to disassemble to fix the leak. In perticular, does the spindle housing have to be disconneceed from the axle? Or does the steering arm just separate from the spindle housing/drive housing

Dang-- A repair manual and no tear down procedure! That'd surprise me if it's a JD manual. There's a good chance that somebody here has a manual and might provide specific information.
Me describing tear down procedures for my Ford wouldn't be worth much. I can say that if the tractor has it's final gear reduction as part of the spindle rather than in the differential there are a fair number of parts involved and the tear down is less than simple. There also are a number of seals that might cause the leak. Mine would have to be a pretty good leak before it'd be aggravating enough to cause me to want to fix it. ....

Actually I've read this a couple of times since I got up at 3:30. I am not sure by reading this what part is leaking. There are 2 seals that could leak. But my gut feeling is the wheel seal, because that is usually where dirt can get to it.
You will have to unbolt the hub assembly and pull out the insides. There is a snap ring on the inside holding the axle shaft in. Try to keep it all stacked right and remember which bearing is in and out and which sides are in and out.
It is not too complicated just some bolts, bearings, gears, a seal and a snap ring to hold it all together.
I've replaced both my front seals and only took 3 or so hours and that was taking my time. I did F U and have to look at the other side to make sure of the stack arrangement.
Good luck Harvey ....

There are some exploded drawings on the JD Parts web site that might help you get oriented. ....
